Music Thursday: Modest Mussorgsky: Night on Bald Mountain

Because Monday is already taken. This column will feature music I listen to when I write, or maybe sometimes music I just like (and therefore think everyone else should, too).

It’s Halloween Eve, and I’ve saved one of the best for last. Here’s Night on Bald Mountain by Modest Mussorgsky:

The piece is a tone poem based on legends of nighttime ghostly revelries in Russia. The images in the video are from Disney’s Fantasia. The demon-like creature at the top of the mountain is Chernobog (literally “Black God” in Russian), a pagan Slavic deity of darkness and night.

And if you like Mussorgsky, you should check out The Mussorgsky Riddle the debut novel from my friend Darin Kennedy. It’s comes out in January but is available for preorder on Amazon now.
