Music Thursday: Edvard Grieg “In the Hall of the Mountain King”

Because Monday is already taken. This column will feature music I listen to when I write, or maybe sometimes music I just like (and therefore think everyone else should, too).

It’s still October, still home of my second favorite holiday! We are in full blown Halloween mode at our house, and we feel a little like the violinists in this video:

This is “In the Hall of the Mountain King” composed for the play Peer Gynt, by Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. It is for the scene in which the title character meets a troll king inside a mountain. The various other trolls want to kill him in several painful ways. The slow, creepy melody that slowly builds into a frenzy lends itself well to the season.
