Because Monday is already taken. This column will feature music I listen to when I write, or maybe sometimes music I just like (and therefore think everyone else should, too).
This is one of my favorite pieces of fiddle music. I love it because it shows how creative musicians can be by taking a traditional piece of music and putting their own stamp on it. “Sleepy Maggie” is a traditional folk song every fiddle player learns, but this version is truly unique. I love how the fiddle just slides in at the beginning.
The fiddle player is Ashley MacIsaac, native to Nova Scotia and cousin to Natalie MacMaster. The singer is Mary Jane Lamond, a native speaker of Scottish Gaelic. Proof that Canadians are awesome is that this song received to 40 radio play in Canada when it was released in 1995.
