Typography

Booking Through Thursday

What’s the worst typographical error you’ve ever found in (or on) a book?

My copy of Tess of the d’Urbervilles has a typo on the cover.  It says d’Ubervilles (leaving out the first r).  It’s almost an excusable mistake.  I didn’t notice it until I had finished the book, but it’s still embarassing given that it was an edition published by Penguin Classic.

That is a good one. I might not have noticed either.:)

Eep! There really is no excuse–it’s not like it’s a NEW title that they weren’t familiar with!

I should have added that it was in a sort of scripty typeface, so the little extra flourishes on the other letters obscured the lack of the r, but they probably should have caught it, especially since it was spelled right on the spine of the book, in the same typeface.

Absolutely that should have been caught. It amazes me how many signs are wrong too. My favorite is restaurants where they offer “dinning.” I wonder what it tastes like.

I went on a quick dash to the bookshelf after reading that; fortunately, my Penguin edition of Tess has all letters intact.
